A Eurosport studio in Lima

It is nearly the end of the Dakar Rally but the question of whether the African Dakars were harder than the South American will not go away. In attempt to discover the truth Dakar greats Hubert Auriol, Eddie Orioli and Cyril Neveu have been invited to discuss the subject with Jacky Ickx . With a dozen victories between them they share their memories of past rallies, a little know fact is that they have all in recent years relocated to Yorkshire......

Hubert: Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of energy drink.

Eddie: Nothing like a good can of chilled Red Bull, eh, Cyril?

Cyril: You're right there, Eddie.

Jacky: Who'd have thought thirty year ago you'd all be sittin' here in South America drinking cold Red Bull, eh?

Hubert: In them days we was glad to get a bottle of water.

Eddie: A bottle of warm water.

Jacky: Without a bottle.

Cyril: Or water.

Hubert: In a cracked cup, an' all.

Jacky: Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.

Eddie: The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth.

Cyril: But you know, we were happy in those days, though it were hard.

Hubert: Because it was hard. My old Team Manager used to say to me, "easy doesn't buy you victory, son".

Jacky: Aye, 'e was right.

Hubert: Aye, 'e was.

Jacky: I was happier then and I had nothin'. We used to sleep in this tiny old tent with great big holes in the roof.

Eddie: Tent! You were lucky to sleep in a tent! We used to sleep under a tarp, all two hundred of us, no sleeping mats and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of being kidnapped by Mauritanian terrorists.

Cyril: Eh, you were lucky to have a tarp! We used to have to sleep out in t' desert!

Hubert: Oh, we used to dream of sleepin' out in the desert! Would ha' been a palace to us. We used to sleep in old Bedouin rubbish tips. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting camel meat dumped all over us! Tent? Huh.

Jacky: Well, when I say tent, it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin and 'alf the tarp was missing but it was a tent to us.

Eddie: We were evicted from our 'ole in the ground by ASO; we 'ad to go and sleep in the Lac Rose.

Cyril: You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us sleeping in t' shoebox in t' middle o' piste.

Hubert: Cardboard box?

Cyril: Aye.

Hubert: You were lucky. We lived for the whole two weeks in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at four in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, ride our bikes for fourteen hours a day, day-in day-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got to the bivouac our team manager would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

Eddie: Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at four o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, ride a twenty hour day for tuppence a month, come in, and our team manager would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

Cyril: Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick bivouac clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, rode twenty-four hours a day mostly through fesh fesh for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our team manager would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

Jacky: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, drive twenty-nine hours a day all of it in fesh fesh, and pay team manager for permission to drive wi' team, and when we got to the bivouac, our he would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

Hubert: And you try and tell Marc or Cyril that ..... they won't believe you.

ALL: They won't!

Já agora, em defesa do Peterhansel...

It is all written in italian, and I did find some interesting insights about the Peterhansel/Ciotti incident, told from Ciotti himself. As the blogger says Ciotti is a nice guy that from day one is on the funny side making jokes of everyone and everything and making up excuses to withdraw. Reality is that he went on racing with his Rieju getting better positions leg after leg. Anyway, here's what Ciotti said:

"..."I was doing my best - says Filippo (Ciotti) - to push the bike out of the river and a spanish guy was helping me out. I was just two metres away from the land when Stephane came hitting my leg and I had just the time to jump to get away from his rear wheel. Obviously I did let my bike go and it drowned into the river" ..... "I didn't get hurt, I was feeling ok - he goes on joking - so unfortunately I had no excuse to withdraw from the race. Then the bike didn't want to start so I thought that it was a perfect excuse. Now I can finally withdraw. But here comes Franco Picco saying: "that's not a problem. Now do this, open that, clean there, then put this aside, put that there and the bike will start again. Is that all clear?" while I was thinking "Thanks Franco, don't worry, go on with your race, do not mind about me". Picco instead wanted to fix everything so I had to get at the bivouac. ()

At that point his first will was to get Peterhansel but he found him already at his tent begging pardon for what he did. "Please excuse me, I haven't seen you, from that car we do not have good visibility, I never did hit a biker, please excuse me, I swear it never happened before....ecc ecc".

..... The frenchman then declared: "I have seen Filippo (Ciotti) in the river and at first I did stop waiting for him to get out. Then I saw he was two metres from the edge and was going to get out so I moved, but at that point the guy who was helping him fell on the slippery surface and Filippo found himself alone pushing the bike out from the water on a steep edge. That is why that manouvre took him more time than I expected and I eventually did hit him".

On a following report another bit is added to the story:

"After Stephane and Filippo cleared the question at the tent, Peterhansel offered himself to get to the race direction to ask a time refund for Ciotti declaring that was his fault. Peterhansel then met Franco Picco at the bivouac and reassured him that the delay accumulated by Ciotti would be canceled. At that point Picco answered "well, if I knew I would also ask refund for the time I have spent fixing Filippo's bike..." Peter answered "You're right" and got back at the race direction to take care of it."

End of the story: Ciotti had 33 mins back and Picco 11 mins.

Sorry, I know it is an old story and I had to "cut" a couple of parts from the articles (sorry also for the bad translations...) but I thought it was interesting to get all points of view.

http://www.mundomoto.esp.br/wp-content/ ... r_2012.jpg
