Subject: "TAKE YOUR KTM LC8 ADVENTURE FOR ADVENTURE ROADS, AND HAVE, WITH LUCK, 45.000 KM OF FUN"...
Dear Sir,
I’ve been experiencing several major problems with Portuguese importer Sociedade Comercial do Vouga and official concessionaire Caismotor in Alcabideche-Portugal, regarding my KTM 950 ADV model 2004.
This bike was never used in competition and expeditions. Was used only in weekends.
Brief Description:
1-I owen of a KTM 950 ADV model 2004 bought from the Portuguese importer Sociedade Comercial do Vouga in 2006. At this moment the engine of mine KTM died with less then 45.000km.
2- I’ve always made the maintenance of my KTM in the official concessionaire Caismotor in Alcabideche.
3- In the end of May 2010, after only about 500km of use after I’ve made a service maintenance including valve check and clearance adjustment in Caismotor concessionaire the engine died, because of a broke valve damaging several organs of the engine.
4- This are the conclusions of KTM concessionaire Caismotor:
a-The broken engine had nothing to do with error of diagnosis or incorrect maintenance on the part of the Caismotor.
b-The broken valve is normal and must mainly be related to the use given to the bike (off-road);
c-For a Lc8 engine normally used in is off-road is normal to have a premature consuming and to result in the failure now observed;
d-The fact of the engine to have failed with 45.000km is normal having in account that the use of bike is off- road;
e-The valves when of the last refining “they were leaned”, for what in the next intervention it would have to take new valves. That’s normal in lc8 engine with 45.000km used off-road.
f-One of the valves in the front cylinder broke damaging several organs of the engine. That’s normal in lc8 engine with 45.000km used off-road.
g-The fact that I’ve spend about 4000€ in maintenance (I am not talking about consumable type tires, transmissions, etc) through approx. 4 years allowed that the engine had a superior longevity, otherwise it would probably died at 20.00km;
I’ve send this explanation from Caismotor to Portuguese KTM importers, to Engº Nuno Gerónimo, and the following text is the official Sociedade Comercial do Vouga clarification and commentary:
I’ve been analyzing the problem, and in fact the explanation given for the Caismotor is inside of correct.
This type of damages is normal that it appears of a hard use off-road, is a damages that comes exclusively from the bankruptcy of the valve.
When reference, that in a revision took oil susp., candles, oil, filters, refining of valves (that according to vasco of the caismotor is in the limit and would have to take new valves in the next service maintenance), this situation must have sufficiently been warned….
My comments and questions to KTM are:
So far focus has been in the use of mine bike being pointed as the origin of the rupture of the valve that originated other damages in the engine.
However that’s not the point. Independently of the use that I gave to my bike I’ve made, a few days before the damage of the valve and consequent problem in the engine a service maintenance in the Caismotor with, among others things, refining of valves.
I was informed when I peak-up the bike, after the intervention, that the valves had been “sharpened” and that the service maintenance is concluded.
In the continuation of the intervention Vasco (Caismotor mechanic) only observed and told that: … in a next intervention it would have to take new valves because there’s no tolerance for new refining.
The mechanic also informed that the engine was too noisy.
Any suggestion or indication was not presented to me from that it would have to proceed to any intervention on risk to exist failure of the equipment.
I conclude now that the bike should have taken new valve than and not in the next maintenance, 7.500km later, but immediately, for what Caimsotor intervention had serious error of diagnostic and evaluation.
At this moment I’m still waiting for the formal presentation of a report of the failure from Caismotor (KTM concessionaire) and Portuguese Importer.
This are some of the questions I send to Caismotor and Vouga KTM importer:
The time passes (weeks, months) and I continue without answers, with the bike stopped and without information.
Have some technicall oficial report indicateing the causes of the damages of the engine explaining the occurred be produced?
After all which is the reason for which the engine was damaged? was a valve that broke? It broke where? in the headquarters of the valve? in the faying surface with the block? The block is marked? It was in (border) or exactly broke the half one of aste? Are the spring broke?
Where are the photos that register and prove the explanation of the origin and cause of the damage?
The mechanic indicated that the engine was noisy?
What type of noise?
What have been done to investigated the origin?
I believe the failure could be avoided if proper maintenance and diagnosis had be done and the mechanic tried to find the problem and the origin of the noisy engine and changed the valves.
I also believe that the failure of the valve is due to incorrect chain maintenance and chain tensioner adjustments procedures…but I don’t have information at this point because no report of the failure was presented? Is this normal procedure for KTM concessionaire?
This failure is under concessionaire warranty but Caismotor refuses responsibility and to do the intervention without any cost to the client.
That’s no admissible and not professional at all. Is this normal KTM procedure?
I hope you could solve this problem demanding the concessionaire and the importer to solve the problem.
I’ve been contacting my layer, Portuguese consumer authority and I’ll contact European consumer authority if nothing will be done and I’ll get no response from KTM factory.
I send in attachment the bill send from caismotor to repair the bike.
I’ll wait for a response from KTM factory for 1 week, after that I’ll conclude that you aren’t interested in solving the problem or that you share Portuguese concessionaire and importer point of view.
I want the engine repaire to be payed for Caismotor but I prefer to do the repair in any other KTM Portuguese concessionaire that you chose.
All of this discussion is open to the Portuguese and Europe trail users and other and can be followed in:

Portuguese Concessionaire and importer are damaging to death KTM name in Portugal and all over Europe, because of this kid behavior…what do KTM intended to do about it:
"TAKE YOUR KTM LC8 ADVENTURE FOR ADVENTURE ROADS, AND HAVE, WITH LUCK, 45.000 KM OF FUN"...
Several friends reported same kind a problems with Caismotor Concessionaire and Importer, and I’ll collect all of the testimonial to support any legal action against Caismotor, Sociedade Comrcial do Vouga and KTM factory, in Portuguese and European courts.
If you wish to contact me you can do so by email ou phone
Best Regards
